How TVA Funds Energy, Environment and Community Programs
TVA is owned by the United States government. Some people think this means TVA gets money from taxes. When TVA began its work in the 1930s, money from taxes paid for building dams and other TVA programs.
But that changed many years ago. In 1959, TVA stopped getting federal funding to operate power plants. Loans – called bonds – help TVA pay for big projects like building new plants to generate more electricity. In 1999, TVA became completely self-funded. The sale of electricity to local power companies throughout the region pays for all TVA’s work.
How Does TVA Use Its Money?

What is a Public Power Company?
TVA and the local power companies it sells power to are all public power companies. That means the companies are owned by everyone in the community!
The people who live in a community get to help make decisions about how the company works. And the company's goal isn't to make money for a few people. It's to serve the people in the community by delivering reliable, affordable electricity.
TVA and Its Partners
TVA works closely with people across the region to do its work. These partnerships include 153 local power companies – like your local electric company! TVA sells them electricity, and they deliver it to your home and school.
But TVA works with a lot of other people and groups:
- Scientists
- Elected leaders in your community
- Local businesses
- Schools
