Public Power for the Valley
TVA and local power companies work closely together to make life better for the people we serve through public power. Public power means that we are not here to make a profit. Instead, our focus is on generating reliable, affordable electricity for the people in our region. Low rates and low energy bills attract companies from across the globe – bringing with them good jobs for communities.
Valley Vision: Meeting the Evolving Expectations of Our Consumers and Communities
As we look toward the future of the public power model in the Tennessee Valley region, TVA, local power company (LPC) partners and direct-serve customers are collaborating in new ways to ensure affordable, reliable, safe and resilient electric service for the 10 million residents of our region. We call this collaboration Valley Vision.
Valley Vision Core Objectives
- Collaborating to serve customers and communities best
- Creating a dynamic and resilient power system of the future
- Driving efficiencies in the planning and deployment of energy resources
- Spurring economic development by creating competitive advantages
- Creating greater customer optionality to meet local needs
Working together, we are moving towards a dynamic two-way power system where energy will move from generation sources to end-use customers and back. Accommodating this new two-way power flow will require innovative advancements across the grid by TVA and local power companies.
LPC leaders, industry associations and TVA team members are currently working together to propose actionable solutions to move toward a more decentralized and decarbonized energy future aimed at best meeting the evolving energy needs of our region.
Delivering Power
Local Power Companies
TVA works in partnership with 153 individual LPCs to keep reliable, affordable, safe and clean public power flowing to homes and businesses throughout the seven-state Tennessee Valley region. These LPCs — both municipal utilities and regional cooperatives — purchase power from TVA and distribute it to consumers within their designated service areas, which are illustrated in the map below.
Sales of energy through LPCs account for over 90% of TVA’s total revenue. The majority of LPCs have secured long-term access to the benefits of public power for decades to come. To find out more about your local power company,

Direct Serve Customers
More than 60 large, energy-intensive industrial customers count on TVA for a reliable stream of affordable power, as do seven federal installations. These directly served customers include producers of primary metals, chemicals, industrial gases, forest products, and rolled aluminum products. Sales to these direct-serve industrial customers account for about 8% of TVA’s revenue.
Off-System Utilities
Twelve southeastern U.S. utilities buy power from TVA on the interchange market, accounting for about 1% of TVA’s total revenue.
