Building Tomorrow Together

About TVA

TVA’s mission is simple, in a sense: to serve the people of the Valley region.

In the 1930s, both poverty and nature ravaged the Tennessee Valley region. So in 1933, U.S. Congress members worked with President Franklin D. Roosevelt to create the Tennessee Valley Authority, with a broad mandate to “improve the standards of living of the people.”

In the decades since, TVA has grown to become the nation’s largest provider of public power, working not for profits, but for the people. And its mandate remains unchanged: to make life here better.

Today, we put that mission in motion through Energy, by delivering reliable, low-cost power to the region. The second is Environmental Stewardship, by caring for the region's natural resources. And the third is Economic Development, through creating sustainable business and job growth.

Energy

Energy

TVA serves more than 10 million people across seven states with affordable, reliable and resilient energy.

Environmental Stewardship

Environmental Stewardship

TVA manages the Tennessee River for navigation and flood control. It also cares for the public lands and waters along the way.

Economic Development

Economic Development

TVA also works to bring business and industry to the region and support good jobs across the service area.

TVA doesn’t only benefit the people of the Valley region but is also part of it. We at TVA live in the same towns, so we share the same roads, the same air, and same water. We share a common hope for the future because we are neighbors, too. And our mission remains the same: to serve and make life better for the people of the Valley region.

Quick Facts

While TVA is owned by the federal government, it doesn’t receive tax funding. Instead, TVA uses revenue from the sale of energy to continue its mission of service to the region.
