Building America's energy future

Energy

The TVA region is growing. More people and more industries are finding their homes in the seven-state region. Power demand is growing. TVA is committed to securing America's energy future, faster.

At TVA, we're Building Tomorrow Together.

TVA is making significant investments in its power system, from increased capacity at generating sites and innovative technology to energy efficiency and collaboration with local power companies.

TVA at a glance

  • Building 6,200 megawatts.
  • 40,000 megawatts total power capacity
  • 99.99% reliability

TVA looks at how much electricity people will need over the next 10 days. This helps them decide which power plants should be running. If there still isn’t enough power, TVA can buy extra electricity from the market. TVA also partners with big companies so when people need a lot of electricity, the factory will reduce electricity use for a short period of time so places like hospitals and homes always have the power they need.

Homeowners in our area have lower electric bills than almost anyone else in the U.S., and industrial customers pay even less than almost all others. Residential rates are lower than 80% of the top 100 U.S. utilities; industrial rates are lower than more than 90% of the top 100 U.S. utilities.

Your bill depends on the basic rate, the cost of fuel used to make power, and how much electricity you use. When the weather is very hot or very cold, people use more power, which can make bills higher.

TVA is a public power provider, which means it does not have owners asking for profits – it’s power for the people, by the people. TVA also plans carefully and uses low-cost financing. All of this helps keep rates lower for everyone.
