Valley Renewable Energy

The Tennessee Valley Authority has been serving the Valley region with low-cost, renewable power since its earliest days in 1933. Renewable, clean, low-cost energy from TVA's dams brought new investments and economic opportunities for the region.

Today, TVA's network of hydroelectric dams provide about 10% of the region’s electricity. Innovative programs continue to increase energy production from renewable sources.

TVA continues to seek energy sources that maintain affordability, add capacity to the grid and support energy security. Renewable energy plays a key role in that strategy. Residents, communities, businesses and industries can all help.

Renewable sources account for a little more than 10% of TVA’s electricity.

Some renewable energy sources, like solar power, can only work when the sun is shining. TVA keeps the power system producing 24/7 electricity in the meantime by storing energy in giant batteries (what we call battery storage), using smart grid tools (like digital tools to track power use for efficiencies), and always having backup power plants ready to make sure there is always enough electricity.

During hot summer or cold winter days, you can shift household chores to different times to save electricity, such as doing laundry or running the dishwasher in the evening. Avoid first thing in the morning and when you return home from school or work, which is when the most electricity is used (what we call “peak” hours). Setting your thermostat a few degrees colder or warmer can be a big help, too!

Yes! There are many incentives and rebates through TVA’s EnergyRight program. For example, people can get rebates for home projects like upgrading their air conditioner or heat pumps and for switching to a smart thermostat. Some homes can even get upgrades for free, and businesses can get rebates, too.
