Environmental Reviews for Renewable Energy Projects
Environmental Reviews for Power Purchase Agreements
TVA conducts environmental reviews in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, which requires federal agencies to consider the effects of their proposed projects on the human and natural environment before final decisions are made. NEPA also requires compliance with other environmental regulations, such as those under the National Historic Preservation Act and the Endangered Species Act.
TVA must complete a NEPA review for any action they propose to take, or authorize others to take. TVA’s actions associated with the construction and operation of renewable energy resources require a NEPA review, as well as TVA’s activities associated with interconnection requests such as upgrades or new construction on the TVA transmission system. Additionally, TVA’s purchase of power is also considered a federal action that is subject to NEPA. Please refer to the NEPA & Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)/Interconnection Agreement (IA) FAQ document below for additional details.
TVA strives to conduct environmental reviews of renewable energy projects in a timely fashion according to the established processes. TVA asks that all developers and contractors follow the process and timeline for NEPA review activities. Please see below for resources that ensure the timely completion of all environmental NEPA reviews for renewable projects.
