Watts Bar Reservoir Tract WBR-82 (Iron Hill Island) Bank Stabilization Project
Rhea County, Tennessee
In April 2019, TVA completed an environmental assessment (EA) and issued a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) for the proposed placement of rock riprap along 490 feet of shoreline on Iron Hill Island (Tract WBR-82). In June 2018, TVA completed an EA and issued a FONSI for the proposed placement of rock riprap along 480 feet of the shoreline on Iron Hill Island, which is located at Tennessee River Mile 539 on Watts Bar Reservoir in Rhea County, Tennessee. In 2016, TVA completed an EA and issued a FONSI for the application of 490 feet of riprap stabilization on another portion of the island.
TVA is responsible for the management of public shoreline on Watts Bar Reservoir and for the protection of shoreline and aquatic resources, while providing reasonable public access. The project is intended to minimize the destabilization and erosion of the shoreline and banks of the island and the resultant turbidity and sedimentation of reservoir waters. The project supports and is consistent with TVA’s mission of environmental stewardship, the objectives for water resource management in the TVA Natural Resources Plan (NRP, 2011), and TVA’s management goals set forth in TVA’s Tims Ford Reservoir Land Management Plan (RLMP, 2000).
