TVA’s Powerful Partnerships Drive U.S. Energy Innovation and Economic Growth

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. —  The Tennessee Valley Authority is accelerating its mission to deliver affordable, reliable, and innovative energy solutions through a growing network of strategic partnerships across the region, the nation and the world. At its August meeting, the TVA Board of Directors reaffirmed its commitment to collaboration to meet rising energy demands, drive economic growth, and lead next-generation technologies like advanced nuclear to power AI-infrastructure.

We’re delivering it through powerful partnerships that meet growing demand while keeping rates low for both consumers and businesses.”

Partnerships in Action

TVA is partnering closely with local power companies, directly served customers, federal agencies, and private-sector innovators to tackle the most urgent energy challenges of our time.

On Monday, TVA announced a groundbreaking partnership with Kairos Power and Google to launch a scalable, next-generation nuclear business model. By becoming the first U.S. utility to secure a power purchase agreement for electricity from a Gen IV reactor, TVA is leading the charge in reestablishing American leadership in nuclear energy.

This deployment is part of Kairos Power’s landmark deal with Google to deliver 500 megawatts of advanced nuclear capacity by 2035 – a critical step in meeting the surging energy demands of AI-driven infrastructure.

 “This first-of-its-kind agreement signals that America’s nuclear energy leadership is back,” said Moul. “By building the technology, the supply chain, and the delivery model right here at home, we’re not just powering the future — we’re helping America win the AI race.” 

Strong Leadership, Measurable Progress

Since his appointment in April, Moul has elevated TVA’s position as a national leader in energy innovation. Under his leadership, the agency is making measurable progress in powering the Tennessee Valley region’s growing economy. During the August Board meeting, TVA staff presented updates that highlight this momentum:

• New Nuclear Innovation: TVA is America’s SMR leader – years ahead of any other utility – putting America on the fast track to nuclear energy dominance. TVA is the first U.S. utility with an early site permit from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the only utility with a construction permit application accepted for review by the NRC for the BWRX-300 SMR technology – a major milestone.
• Fusion Energy Development: TVA’s highly skilled workforce, known for repairing and refurbishing some of the most challenging components in the power industry, enabled the agency to sign a commercial contract with TypeOne Energy to manufacture components for a prototype stellarator nuclear fusion machine at TVA’s Bull Run site.
• Power Grid Expansion: TVA is actively expanding its transmission grid and generation capacity with plans to build 6,200 megawatts of new generation to support new industries and economic growth across the region. Over 3,500 megawatts are already under construction – enough to power over two million homes. TVA is working closely with communities to identify locations for new energy assets. This ensures communities benefit from billions in investment while meeting national energy goals.
• Strong Financial Health:  Since August 2024, TVA has raised a total of $5.8 billion in long-term funding at favorable interest rates. This included the August 5, 2025, announcement of $1.25 billion of new 5-year maturity global power bonds with an interest rate of 3.875%. This was the third offering of bonds larger than $1 billion in the previous six months.
• Energy Efficiency & Demand Response: Working hand-in-hand with local power companies and communities, TVA is investing $1.5 billion to help people and businesses use energy more efficiently and earn money by reducing usage during peak times. The results speak for themselves: over $800 million in combined lifetime savings and earnings for participants since October 2023.
• Disaster Response & Environmental Stewardship: After mitigating the impact of flooding from Hurricane Helene, TVA led a year-long cleanup effort in partnership with FEMA and TEMA, restoring Douglas Lake and reinforcing its commitment to community resilience. This effort earned TVA the Outstanding Watershed Management Project Award from the Clean Water Professionals of Kentucky and Tennessee.

Public Power: Right Model for America’s Energy Future

As America enters a new era of energy demand, TVA’s public power model is uniquely positioned to create partnerships that will deliver the innovation and infrastructure needed to power AI, advanced manufacturing, and long-term economic growth.

TVA has proven that public power works – residential rates are lower than those paid by almost 80% of customers of the top 100 U.S. utilities and industrial rates are lower than those paid by 90% of customers of the top 100 U.S. utilities.

In fiscal year 2024 alone, TVA helped attract $8.9 billion in projected capital investment, which is expected to support the creation of more than 10,350 new jobs and the retention of nearly 42,400 existing jobs.

Over the past five years, the impact has been even greater. TVA has helped generate approximately $45.9 billion in projected capital investment, which in turn is expected to help create more than 91,150 new jobs and retain over 234,900 jobs across the region.

That’s our public power model. Those are our public power partnerships. That’s what aligns with our national, state and local goals as well as our economic needs.”
