TVA Partners With Virginia DWR to Enhance Recreational Access to Powell River

Jul 24, 2024
  • TVA partnered with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources to open and enhance three-stream access sites on the Powell River in Lee County, Virginia.
  • Areas along the Powell River that were previously inaccessible via public land are now easily accessible for water recreationists.
  • These riverfront land improvements enable new recreation opportunities for communities and promote local economic benefits from visitors.

JONESVILLE, Va. — The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources hosted a ribbon-cutting event along the bank of the Powell River in Jonesville, Virginia, Wednesday to celebrate the completion of three stream access site improvement projects.

These land improvement projects have transformed riverfront areas that were previously inaccessible via public land to areas now easily accessible by water recreationists, such as anglers and kayakers. A vital resource for local communities, the Powell River is home to numerous species of fish, mussels and other wildlife.

“These sites were thoughtfully designed to be environmentally friendly, ensuring minimal impact on the river’s ecosystem while enhancing public enjoyment,” TVA Natural Resources Director Rebecca Hayden said. “We couldn’t have asked for a better partner on these projects than the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. By working together, we accomplished far more than either agency could have on its own.”

The site at which Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting took place featured wide wooden steps leading down to the water. The steps are intersected by a raised track that can be used to aid kayakers and canoers in safely carrying their vessel to and from the water. A gravel parking area also was developed off Flanary Bridge Road, along with educational signage about local aquatic resources.

Similar sites have been completed at Poteet Ferry Bridge and Beech Grove Road.

“These projects strengthen the bond between our communities and our natural environment, fostering a culture of conservation and an appreciation for nature,” Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources Executive Director Ryan Brown said. “Another benefit of enhancing recreational opportunities is that we can attract more visitors, support local businesses and even create new jobs.”

Brad Kreps, Clinch Valley Program Director with The Nature Conservancy spoke at Wednesday’s event as well, as that organization also supports stream access site improvements. Inter-agency collaboration is a driving force to ensuring waterways Valley-wide remain vibrant and valuable resources for all.
