Employees Mark TVA’s 92nd Year by Volunteering in Communities

From day one, Tennessee Valley Authority’s mission has gone beyond providing power.

It has always been about making a real difference in the lives of those who live, work and play in the Valley region.

“I enjoy serving the people of the Valley region because it is part of our mission, but it is also a way for TVA to stay active in our communities,” Luke Bagwell, TVA finance management analyst, said.

Bagwell and other TVA employees helped distribute food in Loudon, Tennessee, as part of TVA’s Week of Service activities commemorating the enterprise’s 92^nd anniversary.

“We fed over 200 families in just a couple hours,” he said.

Growing and Building

TVA employees and retirees logged more than 3,600 volunteer hours during this year’s Week of Service, May 12-17.

They put their talents to work by distributing food at a mobile food pantry and sorting food for those facing food insecurity. They even helped people learn how to grow their own food at a hydroponic garden.

They cleaned up parks and helped tackle yardwork.

They assembled shelves for the Soddy Daisy Community Library and built furniture at a domestic violence shelter.

They built little libraries and, in coordination with Habitat for Humanity, helped build big houses.

They assembled and installed five Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation STEM Centers.

“As a trained engineer, I know that hands-on exploration is the key to igniting passion for science and technology in the next generation,” Terica Lamb, TVA Community Relations manager, said. “I’m excited to see the potential that the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation STEM Centers unlock in these students.”

‘A Promise to Serve’

Throughout TVA’s service territory, employees and retirees attended 76 enterprise-wide service events, with many individual teams volunteering at events within communities.

"As TVA celebrates 92 years serving the Valley, I am honored to do that by giving back – supporting the communities … and the places where we live," Melanie Farrell, vice president of TVA Board Services, said.

It’s about serving the people of the region.

"This is a reminder that TVA has been more than just power,” Farrell said. “We've been a promise to serve."
