Around Halloween, it’s easy to imagine dark fiber as something out of a haunted house – cables lurking in the shadows, waiting to spring to life.

But there’s nothing spooky about dark fiber at TVA. In fact, it’s a bright asset with power to shape the Valley region’s future.

What is Dark Fiber?

Despite its mysterious name, dark fiber isn’t a trick – it’s a treat for modern communications. Dark fiber simply refers to fiber optic strands that aren’t currently transmitting data.

Like a room waiting for someone to flip the light switch, these hair-thin glass strands remain “dark” until connected to electronics that send data as pulses of light.

Fiber is installed in bundles inside the ground wire at the top of transmission towers. It’s the most robust communication medium available today, limited only by the laws of physics and the capabilities of the equipment attached. Unlike copper, fiber doesn’t suffer from interference or security issues.

More Than Meets the Eye

You may have heard of fiber internet, but did you know TVA has its own extensive fiber network? With more than 5,500 active miles and more than 35 years of experience, TVA’s fiber infrastructure ensures reliable, real-time system information flows between generation sites, substations and facilities.

“Fiber serves a dual purpose at TVA,” Kristie Goodson, senior dark fiber specialist, said. “It acts as ground wire for our transmission towers and houses the fiber strands themselves.

“We build this infrastructure to meet our own power service needs, but having surplus fiber capacity allows us to lease space on our line to those who need it. This opportunity is a great way for our customers to save money while helping offset project expenses for TVA.”

Lighting Up Opportunities

Dark fiber is simply fiber that’s waiting to be connected. When data centers, broadband providers, research institutions or cloud computing companies plug in, these strands shine bright and deliver high-speed, secure communications across the region.

TVA’s available fiber can be leased to local power companies, private industries, or a variety of other customers, allowing them to fast-track projects and reduce their infrastructure burden.
