TVA Partners With North Alabama Homebuilding Academy

TVA is partnering with the North Alabama Homebuilding Academy (NAHA) to help grow the skilled trades workforce needed to support Alabama’s economic growth and TVA’s long-term energy needs.

Through a $78,000 investment, TVA will fund hands‑on training and provide essential electrical supplies, including wires, connectors, boxes and switches. Students entering the program will also receive a tool bag with items like a hammer, utility knife, six-in-one screwdriver, and safety glasses, removing cost barriers that can prevent students from taking the first step.

"We have really designed this program to meet the learner where they are,” NAHA Executive Director Tommy Davis said. “If they didn't have that help, they would be expected to pay about $250 to get the tools they need to start the job. For someone who hasn't been working, that's really difficult."

NAHA is part of the Alabama Homebuilding Academy Network, a statewide effort to expand access to high‑demand trades that directly support the homes, industries and energy infrastructure that power the region. As communities grow and industries expand, Alabama continues to face an increasing need for skilled workers.

Like utilities across the country, TVA is working to address a generational shift in the labor market as many experienced employees move toward retirement. Partnering with early career programs like NAHA helps prepare more people to enter trade careers that TVA needs to build and maintain the power system and fulfill its mission of delivering reliable, resilient and affordable power.

A Growing Impact Across North Alabama

NAHA’s tuition‑free, hands‑on construction training program is designed to open doors for workers of all backgrounds. Students choose from four core trades – electrical, carpentry, HVAC and plumbing. All are essential competencies sought by employers across the Valley region.

Taught by active or retired industry professionals, the intensive 16‑class program focuses on safety fundamentals, basic tools, technical skills and job readiness.

Graduates move into apprenticeships, entry‑level trades roles and long‑term career paths that support families and strengthen local economies. Davis said each class emphasizes teamwork, respect and transferable skills that prepare students not only for construction roles, but for technical careers across multiple industries.

Since opening in Huntsville in 2020, NAHA has trained more than 800 graduates. The program expanded into Guntersville in 2023 and a Florence location is scheduled to open in 2027.
