Browns Ferry Unit 3 Begins Scheduled Refueling and Maintenance Outage - Feb.20, 2026

ATHENS, Ala. –  On Friday, February 20, TVA’s Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant Unit 3 was safely taken offline for its scheduled refueling and maintenance outage. Upon completion, the unit will be prepared to provide reliable, affordable and carbon-free energy to the people of the Tennessee Valley region for its next generating cycle.

With support from both contracting agencies and internal shared resources, thousands of work activities will be performed during this outage.

“Extensive planning takes place well in advance of our scheduled refueling and maintenance outages to ensure work is safely completed,” said Browns Ferry Site Vice President Daniel Komm. “In addition to numerous inspections and tests, we will also complete a significant amount of maintenance work, which includes the replacement of several components to further strengthen the reliability of our equipment.”

Thanks to the efforts of the men and women of the Browns Ferry team - both past and present – this plant has operated for more than 50 years and was most recently granted a subsequent license renewal by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This renewal allows continued operation until 2053 for Unit 1, 2054 for Unit 2, and 2056 for Unit 3. 

TVA’s investment in this outage, along with improvements made at all three nuclear power plants, helps ensure the energy needs of the Tennessee Valley are met for decades to come.

Unit 3 is one of seven TVA nuclear reactors generating reliable, affordable and carbon-free energy across TVA’s seven-state region. The TVA nuclear fleet is the third-largest in the nation, providing about 40 percent of the electricity used by nearly 10 million people in the Tennessee Valley.
