High Stakes on Guntersville Reservoir

It was a crisp Thursday morning in Scottsboro, Alabama.

Just before sunrise, 200 anglers launched their boats into the misty waters of Guntersville Reservoir, marking the start of the inaugural Ultimate Angler Championship.

This three-day bass fishing tournament drew top talent from across the nation’s professional and amateur fishing leagues.

At stake? A $500,000 grand prize.

For competitors, the tournament would test their skills at one of the world’s premier bass fishing destinations.

For Tennessee Valley Authority’s Environmental Stewardship teams, the event served to showcase the reservoir’s rich biodiversity and spotlight TVA’s role in balancing recreation, land management and community well-being.

“People have a lot of questions about our reservoirs and how we manage them,” Shannon O’Quinn, program manager for TVA Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability, said. “Events like this are a great opportunity for us to share information about the public land that TVA manages and the recreational opportunities around TVA waters.”

About 200 people competed in the Ultimate Angler Championship at Guntersville Reservoir, widely heralded as one of the nation’s best spots for bass fishing.

Reeling in Benefits

Through careful management of 49 reservoirs, TVA delivers a wide range of public benefits, including hydroelectric power, navigation, flood mitigation, water quality and supply, and recreation.

That stewardship helped set the stage for this first-of-its-kind tournament, which combined competitive bass fishing with community outreach and environmental education.

“We had school field trips where kids got to meet birds of prey from the Auburn Raptor Center, participate in a fish restocking on the lake and learn about our ecosystems,” Susan Carothers, Ultimate Angler’s communications director, said. “This (tournament) isn’t just for anglers – it’s for families, residents and tourists. We wanted to create something that the whole community could be involved in.”

As a local partner of the Ultimate Angler Championship, TVA helped kick off the event by featuring a 750-gallon fish tank exhibit containing native species from Guntersville Reservoir.

The exhibit gave local schoolchildren a hands-on opportunity to learn about aquatic biodiversity and the importance of protecting local habitats.

“We participated in this event because when people think about Guntersville Reservoir, they think about TVA,” O’Quinn said. “We’re all about providing recreational opportunities – whether it’s fishing, boating or skiing – and supporting our local community.”

TVA works closely with local and state agencies to monitor water quality, sediment, fish populations and aquatic biodiversity on reservoirs and waterways.

“TVA shares its data with local fisheries and environmental partners to help protect the long-term health of our reservoirs,” Lyndell Williams, TVA Fisheries and Aquatic Monitoring manager said. “Not only are our reservoirs home to hundreds of species of fish, they’re also the water supply for millions of people.”

TVA also helps manage invasive plant species that threaten biodiversity and lake access. This work protects the ecosystem, creates great habitats for fish and also maintains access that enhances the fishing experience overall.

The result? Reservoirs like Guntersville have become top-tier destinations for bass fishing, attracting anglers from across the country and around the world.

And these visitors are a significant economic boost to the region. A study found its reservoirs contribute approximately $11.9 billion annually to local economies – about $1 million per shoreline mile.

Tournaments like the Ultimate Angler Championship are a major driver for that impact.

In Scottsboro alone, the tournament injected more than $10 million into the local economy, Carothers said.

“The hope is that this becomes like the Masters in golf, but for bass fishing – a flagship event that’s always held on Lake Guntersville,” Carothers said.

Beyond driving tourism dollars, tournaments like the Ultimate Angler also promote conservation and responsible fishing.

To protect the fish, they are placed in cool, oxygenated tanks during transport and proper care is incentivized through the tournament’s point system.

“Conservation is the thread that runs through the whole tournament,” Carothers said.

‘Home Waters’

In the end, 24-year-old Tucker Smith claimed the title of Ultimate Angler, with a total catch weight of just over 71 pounds.

The final weigh-ins and awards ceremony were capped off with a concert by country artist Lauren Alaina, who closed the event with a community-wide celebration.

“We were so proud to be able to book Lauren Alaina because ... she was so interested in conservation,” Carothers said. “We think that’s going to attract people outside of the fishing world who will then get to hear that conservation message.”

For many residents, TVA’s reservoirs are more than just bodies of water.

They’re a way of life.

On these waters, friends come to fish, families gather and communities connect.

“This is not just a fishing tournament,” Carothers said. "This is something that the whole state can be involved in and celebrate.”

Through its reservoir management, TVA continues to provide accessible recreation and lasting benefits for generations across the Valley region.

“For those who live around a reservoir, it’s part of their identity – it’s their home waters,” O’Quinn said.
