Shawnee Fossil Plant Emissions

What TVA is doing about emissions at Shawnee

TVA has taken a number of steps to make the efficient generation of power at Shawnee as clean as possible:

  • Units 1 through 9 burn a blend of low-sulfur coal to limit sulfur dioxide emissions and use low-NOx burners to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides.
  • Unit 10—formerly used as a fluidized bed combustion boiler project—was idled in October 2010 and has been retired.
  • In support of environmental agreements, Shawnee units 1 and 4 will be controlled with scrubbers and SCRs by Dec. 31, 2017.
